The Ashmolean is the University of Oxford’s museum of art and archaeology, founded in 1683. The museum’s founding collection included objects from Southeast Asia, and since then the Southeast Asian collection has expanded to include a variety of material from across the region, dating from prehistory up to more recent times.
Dr Farouk Yahya is Leverhulme Research Assistant in Islamic Art and Culture at the Ashmolean Museum. He is the author of Magic and Divination in Malay Illustrated Manuscripts (Leiden: Brill, 2016) and editor of The Arts of Southeast Asia from the SOAS Collections (Penang: Areca Books, 2017).
